Is it ME? Is it my "archaic" (2 1/2 yr old) Smartphone?
Ok guys.... help me out here please. I'm either stupid or...?
I received news this evening that a dear friend's Mom has passed
away. She was a dear friend as well. So I start web surfing from my
Palm Treo 650 "smartphone", trying to find mobile versions of the most
popular travel websites: Orbitz, Expedia, Cheaptickets, Travelocity,
et al., in an attempt to find last minute travel deals from Seattle,
WA to Ontario, CA.
What I found was....well, not much! Some sites out there were for
just one airline. Others you could check flight departure & arrival
times but not much else. But it's hard for me to comprehend that
there are no mobile web sites for booking air travel. How can that
be? Being able to change itineraries for air, hotel, & ground
transportation WHEN YOU'RE TRAVELING seems to be a perfect example of
one great reason to have a "smartphone" in the first place, right?
So...is it me? Are there special "code words" or "secret handshakes"
that you need to know to find these sites? Or is it my phone? Is the
Palm Treo 650 (w/service from Sprint) incapable of running the sites
I'm looking for? Does one need a Windows based device? Or one that
costs more than the airfare will, like the beloved (by my son at
least) iPhone?
Not everyone travels with a laptop. I don't even own one, just my
trusty desktop PC (I DO have a flat screen monitor, courtesy of my
son, Mr. Computer Guru) and my phone. If you can't book travel
wirelessly and you're traveling, are the only options calling the
airline/hotel/car rental co? Or to get thyself to a desktop post
haste?
I'm cornfuzzled. Can anybody out there enlighten me? Pweese?

Jack, I have 1000 anytime minutes for $45, then $15 for unlimited web access, & $15 more for unlimited texting. The texting is kind of frivolous, but I text w/my sister in Hawaii all the time & it's a 'positive' in our relationship, so.... Sorry NZ is so 'spensive! :-( (btw, I KNEW you'd be the first one to reply. You seem to be well schooled in all things "techy". ;-) Thanks!
- United Easy Access launched its wireless booking feature in 2001. I'm not sure if you already have checked it out, but here is the link in case:http://www.united.com/page/article/0,6722,2851,00.html?navSource=FAQIndex
- An interesting article from Internet Magazine with a couple services mentioned, specifically Biztravel.com, which looks to have more PDA travel features than others: http://www.iw.com/magazine.php?inc=020101/02.01.01mcomm1.html
- This PDF file has some good information for new PDA users that you may want to reference as well: http://www.xynomedia.com/media/Wireless_PDAs_Hit_Their_Stride.pdf
- I also thought it was interesting that the FAA has a link that you can access flight information via PDA: http://www.faa.gov/passengers/prepare_fly/airport_status/
Hope this helps you research your options - I did not care for my work PDA and returned it. I have my work laptop and that works for me ;o)
Thanks everybody for your research. As it turns out the funeral is TOMORROW (Thurs.) in Riverside, CA I was working on the guess that the service would be this weekend. So there's no way I could have afforded to go on such short notice. I DID call a local florist there & am sending a beautiful arrangement in her favorite colors: pink stargazers with either purple stock or iris & white roses, along with other blooms in the same color family to fill it out It's not the same as being there, but....*shrug*
